• The heads of the two main drivers' unions looked set for another clash this week despite Trades Union Congress attempts to bring an end to their dispute over Ford's parts drivers.
TUC general-secretary John Monks was due to preside over a meeting between the general-secretaries of the Transport and General Workers Union and the United Road Transport Union. URTU said it expected a "very short meeting" if the TGWU's Bill Morris refused to withdraw or substantiate allegations he had made on BBC radio about URTU "compromising with racism" over Ford drivers.
The row has raged since the 300 drivers at Ford's Dagenham site voted this month to dissolve their TGWU branch and join URTU instead. The TGWU says some of the drivers are involved in organising recruitment for the £30,000-a-year jobs and it is backing the case of seven black assembly workers who are taking Ford to industrial tribunal over its alleged racist recruitment policy for drivers. The tribunal resumes next month.
