• The really successful transport engineer in a few years' time will have been trained to manage road, air and sea engineering and handling services, said the secretary of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers last week. Mr Fletcher, the secretary, was making the first of the annual reports which he will present to IRTE centres, in this case at the North London centre.
He revealed that the IRTE's 25th Jubilee Year was outstanding for a record increase of 22 per cent in membership, bringing the total to 6000.
Mr Fletcher explained how the engineers' register for non-chartered engineers grouped together the aircraft, goods vehicle and materials handling engineer under the national titles Registered Technician Engineer (RTechEng and RTech). in the same way that many engineering specializations were grouped under the title Chartered Engineer. The technicians' register, he said, now had many thousands of RTechEngs, with IRTE having the largest number of registrants.
The Institute naturally wished to link the registration of engineers with transport managers' licensing, and was working towards this.
