DOWN IN ESSEX the County Council's supplies department has come-up with a cost-cutting brainwave. The department has saved £11,500 by converting an old fire appliance chassis to take a road gritter. The latter was formerly mounted on an old exArmy chassis which became too worn out for further service. The fire appliance was converted at a total cost of £3,450, showing a great saving over the purchase of a new chassis and adaptation of the gritter. There are two more similar vehicles with the fire brigade, which are due to be replaced, and the department is looking into the possibility of converting them as well. Because of the mild winter, the new gritter's debut on the roads had not taken place when this report was prepared.
