• Scottish Traffic Commissioner Michael Belts has curtailed the 15-vehicle 0-licence of haulier A&R Aberdeen of Aberdeen by three vehicles for a week from midnight on 27 February. Speaking at an Aberdeen public inquiry, Betts said A&R's maintenance prohibition record had "significantly worsened" since late-1996. The company has been running for 14 years and specialises in short local hauls delivering pulp from Aberdeen docks.
On Iwo occasions in 1997 the company had received S (serious) prohibitions. Betts expressed his "amazement" at the attitude of the
company to its driver defect systems, especially its lack of a nil-defect reporting scheme.
A&R said the problems were down to "good and bad drivers" in the company. Betts immediately replied that the problem was really down to "good and bad management". A&R said a disagreement between the two company directors in 1997 had led to a reduction in funds for fleet maintenance. Now one of those directors hod left, there was a fresh enthusiasm in the company and a new truck had recently been bought. Betts said the curtailment was a "mild sanction".
