for carrying a 5-ton payload. What are the new laws governing the braking of such vehicles?
A The latest regulations covering braking of
commercial vehicles state that an artic must have brakes which give an efficiency of 40 per cent through one means of application and 15 per cent through a secondary means. The only parts that can be common in the two systems are the brake units themselves. It is normal for the handbrake to provide the secondary means in older vehicles.
You should also bear in mind when purchasing the used artic that probably within the next five years, efficiencies of 50 and 25 per cent respectively will be necessary and that later this year tests for the plating of vehicles will begin. I suggest you read the article published in CM July 11 which deals with the latest situation under the general title, "This way for the test".
