IN UK operators moved another step closer to 40 tonne operation this week with the clarification of weight limits for Continental work, and the news of large EEC cash injections for Britain's roads. Earlier fears that UK hauliers would be prevented from operating above 38 tonnes through mainland EEC countries have now been firmly quashed.
This follows a meeting between Freight Transport Association director general Garry Turvey, and the new EEC director general of trans
port, Eduardo Pena.
After the EEC Transport Ministers' meeting on June 30, which produced an agreement on drive axle weights (CM July 5), many observers believed that Britain's Transport Secretary John Moore had agreed to limit UK operators to 38 tonnes when running on the Continent.
Since July 1, except for the UK and Ireland which have got a derogation, the remainder of the EEC countries are permitting 40-tonne vehicles to circulate among member states.
