THE CLOSURE of a Morrisons distribution centre in Tamworth, Staffs, next month wit see 582 workers either being made redundant or moving to another site, says the union representing the bulk of the workforce.
The distribution centre, operated by DHL Exel on behalf of Morrisons, was one of the regional hubs for the supermarket, but Morrisons is restructuring its operations.
The T&G section of Unite, which represents 400 workers at the centre, including drivers, says it is "satisf ied" with the way the closure has been handled. Workers have either taken full redundancy, partial redundancy
(a combination of redundancy and redeployment in another role) or gone to work at the DHL Exel site at Swan Valley, Rugby.
A T&G spokesman says: "In the circumstances we aren't too unhappy about the way things have worked out for our members."
