Warehousing and lighterage, as well as haulage, are provided at Warring
REDEPLOYMENT of the facilities provided by two haulage organizations within the Transport Development Group at Warrington has resulted in much extended services being made available to commercial undertakings on Merseyside. Of the three businesses originally concerned, one came into being in 1837 and the others in 1857 and 1870 respectively. In their various ways they have served the area throughout the intervening period. First in the field was John Buckley and Co. Ltd., founded by John Buckley of Warrington, which continues as a separate entity. Isherwood and Co. Ltd., dating back to 1857, and Bishop's Wharf Carrying Co. Ltd., established in 1870, were amalgamated on January 1, 1963, to form Bishop's Wharf and Isherwood Ltd. The two present-day companies share a six-acre site, where extensive warehousing accommodation is available, at Howley Lane, Warrington.
The Buckley fleet provides mainly long-distance transport, covering approximately 2+ rn. miles annually in the process. Of that total around three quarters relates to general haulage, the remainder being contract work. On the Bishop's Wharf and Isherwood side the activities are covered by the four main headings in transport, wharfage, warehousing and lighterage. Mr. J. D. Muskett, now managing director of B.W.I., formerly held a similar position with Buckley's, but the tatter responsibility was transferred in September, 1960, to Mr. W. A. Walmsley, previously commercial manager of Silver Roadways Ltd. Mr. Muskett, a descendant of the original John Buckley, joined Buckley in pre-war days, returning to the business after service in the Royal Navy. After denationalization the business was reconstituted under the auspices of the Transport Development Group.
