• FTA members will have received, in the last week, their copies of the 1971 Yearbook, which has had a delayed start this year due to the postal strike.
The book is set out as before with sub-headings in the margin making reference easy and, in addition to a contents list, an extensive index is included which enables any particular item or group of items to be found quickly.
A number of new features have been included this year, covering training for both drivers and management, a list of Freightliner depots, and some notes on container loading and securing.
The most important new addition is the tabular guide to exemption regulations which is perhaps the most useful feature of the whole book.
In the introduction Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, writes that "pressure upon inefficient operators and defective vehicles will be maintained" —this, Mr Peyton suggests, will be welcomed by the large majority of operators who conduct their businesses with proper regard for efficiency and safety. He also points out that 1971 will be the first year for nearly four decades when road transport of goods will be free of quantitative controls.
