The Type 5800 electric density meter from H. Tinsley and Co Ltd will electrically record the specific gravity of liquids. The device uses a magnet in a guided float with opposing forces provided by a fixed magnet. Small, magnetic relays can be made to operate when the specific gravity of the liquid displaced by the float reaches any predetermined value. Alternatively, a continuous signal can be obtained. This work has been a co-operative effort by Tinsley and Oldham and Son Ltd, the battery company. The Type 5800 is compact (18cm x 5cm diameter) and is fully patented; several pre-production models are on test on lead-acid type batteries. The high sensitivity of the system to changes in liquid density has been confirmed, it is stated.
Initially, models are strictly for application to the problems of correctly charging large and expensive batteries in terms of the specific gravity of the electrolyte. Also, the system can be adapted for monitoring electrolyte level variations.
