• You are legally required to assess the risks in ycur workplace and put in place a plan to control them.
• You do not have to appoint a legal or health and safety specialist. You can do this work yourself or appoint a manager with the relevant authority.
• You should identify potential hazards. These include workplace transport risks, the risk of falls and manual handling risks. A comprehensive health and safety checklist for haulage companies is published by the Health and Safety Executive (,www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg379.pdf or www.hse.gov.uldhaulage/index.htm).
You should:
• Decide who might be harmed and how • Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions • Record your findings and implement them • Set a timetable so you can review your assessment and update it The HSE publishes an example of how risk assessment could be carried out in a smallto medium-sized haulage company.
