• Coach operators are baffled by last Saturday's report that the GLC strategic planning committee has persuaded some of them to omit the Changing of the Guard from their London tour's.
Mr William Varney, chairman of the PV0A's London area, said, following a meeting of the area committee last week: "Coach operators fully appreciate the problems of the police and others in coping with traffic for the Changing of the Guard, but we resent the way in which the coach has been presented as the villain of the piece. The tourist industry is vital to the
British economy and we are only doing our best to make the tourist appreciate his visit.
"However, we recognize the problem and, with the authorities, have tried to find a practical solution. We think it is the Government Departments and London Government which refuse to face up to the problem. They benefit from the tourists but the only solutions they can think of are negative and will damage tourism, We will co-operate with any practical solutions, but there is no value in advertising for tourists and then antagonizing them."
