• A lorry driver, severely injured in a fatal car smash, received 280,000 agreed damages at the High Court in London last week.
Anthony Welsh, 49, was rushed to hospital when his Dodge lorry collided with a Ford Transit van on the B1035 Clacton Road, at Mistley, Essex, on 5 April 1982.
Van driver Denis King, travelling in the opposite direction, was killed in the crash.
Welsh, of Kelvedon, Essex, suffered a hernia in the left groin, multiple cuts and bruises, a fracture to the shin bone and shock.
He left hospital on 21 May 1982, but was re-admitted a month later for an operation on his hernia. He spent the next month walking with the aid of crutches then a walking stick.
After the accident Welsh suffered a major psychological truama, and was forced to quit working for Roadline, in association with whom he ran a road haulage business on a self-employed basis. He cannot raise his right arm above his ear and is unable to lift heavy objects.
The defendant company SOS Motor and Engineering, of, Golders Green, admitted that the accident was caused by the negligent driving of King, their former employee. The damages were agreed in an out-ofcourt settlement.
