Last Wednesday (11 November) the lorry, which was delivering a cargo of tyres to the nearby Rover plant, crossed a grass verge and careered into two semi-detached houses at around 02:00hrs. A retired couple who were in the house at Longbridge Lane, Northfield, Birmingham, were taken to hospital and part of the house was demolished.

Eunice Haysome, 59, was "catapulted" out of her bed. Her husband, John Haysome, 65, suffered a deep laceration to his leg as debris showered on them from the impact. Mrs Haysome was said to be severely shocked. Driver Phillip Wicklow of Bedworth, Warwickshire was trapped with the dashboard crushing his lap and the roof of the cab pushing down on his head. Both Wicklow's legs and one arm were broken.

Sixteen fire fighters battled to release him, despite the risk of part of the house collapsing. Station Office Paul Grey of Northfield Fire Station says: "People said the impact sounded like a bomb blast. It took us an hour to get Mr Wicklow out of the vehicle and much longer to remove the vehicle."
