A 38% DROP IN freight crime during the third quarter is attributed to TruckPol's decision to axe the recording of fuel thefts under 1,000 litres.
Since July, the freight crime-fighting unit has stopped recording these thefts. TruckPol says this contributed to the number of recorded incidents falling to 670 in 03 compared to 1,085 for the same period in 2008.
"There were so many small cases of fuel siphoning and it was getting more and more removed from what TruckPol is about, and yet taking up so much time. The unit's original brief is about thefts of and from vehicles hijack and warehouse robberies," says TruckPol head DC Alan Soames.
He says hauliers should report fuel theft to the local police "More incidents reported to the police will encourage them to put resources together to catch offenders."
