• The most extensive recruitment campaign ever undertaken by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd. (Midland Red) is to be mounted in an attempt to improve the reliability of some of the company's services, announced Mr. J. W. Womar, director and general manager, last week.
The campaign will last a month and coincide with the introduction of new rates of pay which provide drivers with about £17 for a scheduled week's work of about 45 hours, and almost a further £3 for one-man operators, together with opportunities for overtime in addition at higher rates of pay. Television advertising will be used for the first time, supported by 26 newspapers, posters, brochures and leaflets covering the company's operational area.
Mr. Warner said that he was very concerned at the number of complaints which were being received from members of the public, arising from the unreliability of some Midland Red services. It was unfortunate that despite an intake of over 200 additional o-m-o buses, which eased the conducting position, lost mileage, due mainly to shortage of drivers, was higher than ever before.
