• Two truck drivers have been arrested for smuggling ecstasy tablets with a street value of .£1.711m into England.
Customs searched the British-registered vehicle after it disembarked from the early morning ferry in Newhaven from France last Thursday (12 September). They discovered 133,500 ecstasy tablets in a wooden crate which was part of a mixed load from Germany.
The two drivers, from Barnsley and Stockport, were arrested and interviewed by Customs, but later released on bail pending enquiries.
"We are pleased to have stopped such a large quantity of drugs from hitting the streets," says Customs law enforcement spokesman Bob Geiger. "it is the largest seizure of Class-A drugs we have ever had at Newhaven."
Customs believes the drugs may have been destined for North-West England.
