THE SETTING up of London's first freight complex moved a stage nearer this week. The GLC Transport Cpmmittee decided to proceed with discussions with British Rail 2nd Brent Borough Council aimed at an early application for planning consent.
There has been strong commercial interest in the project, the committee was told.
Two sites are being considered: a 16-acre area dissected by the North Circular Road near where the road crosses the railway and a 32-acre site to the north of the first, also off the North Circular.
It is estimated that the complex could have railway sidings, 350,000 square feet of distribution depots, a cafe', 400-bed hostel and canteen for lorry drivers, a lorry park for 100 vehicles and a substantial amount of supporting office space.
Mrs Enid Wistrich, the GLC's spokesman on freight, said: "It would be a depot where goods could be transferred from road to rail as required and where big loads could be stored for distribution by normal delivery vehicles which are generally smaller than long-distance lorries."
