producing 40 cubic yards of ballast an hour, has been built by Tapper Construction, Ltd., Whangerei, New Zealand, using an industrial unit supplied by Leyland Motors, Ltd. The plant, which is used for crushing and screening ballast on site for New Zealand Railways, is permanently mounted on a semi-trailer drawn by a Comet short-wheelbase tractor.
The chute and conveyor are so designed that when the plant is travelling by road, they can be carried in a " jack-knifed " position. As the outfit is 10 ft. wide, road speed is restricted to 15 m.p.h., but on a trial run a speed of 35 m.p.h. was attained, the semitrailer and its load remaining steady.
A self-contained Leyland PU,450 industrial unit supplies power for the crusher and for driving a 20 kVA generator which provides current for the six electric conveyor motors.
