by John Kendall • London-based Transport S ecurity Systems has developed a flat tyre detector for use with its Runflat 2000 system which enables a vehicle to be driven between 15 and 50km with a flat tyre. The Report system is designed for use with steel belted tyres.
The steel belt behaves like a magnetic recording tape. A pick-up/erase probe is mounted in the wheel arch and a magnetic assembly is fitted inside the tyre on the well-filling band or roller that forms the basis of the flat running system.
The whole system is connected via a control unit to a flashing light emitting diode (LED) on the dashboard.
On each revolution, the erase probe magnetically "wipes" the steel belt and detects the magnet in the run flat device. A green LED signals that the tyre is inflated. If the tyre loses pressure the stee draws closer to the t and "records" the signal on the belt trii a red flashing LE buzzer.
Although the sys designed primarily fl and light vehicles, 1 is being develop( heavy truck I Currently the syste tinguishes between ii and flat tyres. The 4 ny is modifying it to a partially deflated IQ Sold in conjunctio the Runflat 2000 s; Report would cost IN £40-£50 per wheel inflation monitoring this would fall to e £20 per wheel.
