• Because of the Government's wage and prices freeze, an inquiry into proposed higher tolls for using the Tyne tunnel between Jarrow and Howdon has been postponed. The tunnel authorities had been seeking permission to raise the toll for heavy vehicles from 20p to 30p and for cars from 12+p to 15p.
