THE first of a new fleet of 12 single' decker buses for Chesterfield Corporation Transport was delivered shortly before Christmas, to add to the 13 unclerfloor-engined single-deckers already in service. A number of improvements have been incorporated in the light of operating experience with the earlier buses. These include continuous strip lighting, heating ducts with outlets above each passenger, supplying warm or cold air as necessary, and longer windows with fewer pillars to give a panoramic effect.
• Based on A.E.C. Reliance chassis, the 30-ft. bodies of the new vehicles have been built by East Lancashire Coachbuilders Ltd., and seat 42 passengers. They have been designed to operate either as one-man buses, when up to eight standing passengers are carried, or with a conductor, when the standing capacity is increased to 18, making a total complement of 60 passengers, equivalent to the older type double-deckers in the fleet. The front offside passenger seat has been designed to fold back in off-peak periods, to provide space for folding prams.

A modification has been made to the colour scheme of the new single-deckers to provide more cream—they have a cream roof instead of the normal green. The interiors are completely lined in Formica, with Treadmaster floor cover
ing, and double-glazing is specified for the front nearside windows to prevent misting; double-glazed roof panels assist the natural lighting during daylight. Magnetic fan couplings are employed on the engine-cooling system.
