IN opening the first vehicle-testing 1 centre at Slough on Monday, Mr. Hugh Molson, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, said that shortage of money and lack of manpower were the chief reasons why the Ministry was not proceeding with a scheme for the compulsory test
ing of vehicles. Reliance would be chiefly placed, he said, on education and persuasion.
Ald. W. H. Jennings, chairman of Slough Road Safety Council, said he was particularly anxious about the smaller types of commercial vehicle [up In 30 cwt.]. He knew that privatecar owners would take full advantage of the fatilities, but he was out to encourage the owners of light vans to send their vehicles for test.
The testing station, which is some way out of the town at the Territorial Drill Hall, will be open until July 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on week-days and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
The station is a three-bay openfronted building. In the first bay, the electrical equipment is tested and inspected, the most important check being by use of a Lucas beam setter. In the centre bay, brake efficiency is recorded by Girling equipment and in the third bay, wheel alignment, camber and castor are checked by Dunlop instruments.
A check on Mr. Molson's Ministry Humber Pullman revealed a bald offside rear tyre and illegal siting of the reflectors.
The following concerns are co-opeiating in the experiment:—Ferodo, Goodyear, Dunlop, Firestone, India, Girling and Lucas.
FORD WORKERS' PAY RAISED INCREASES in pay negotiated on I Monday will give Ford workers the following hourly rates:—Grade 1 (skilled), 5s. 7d. (an increase of 30.); grade 2 (semi-skilled), 5s. (3id.); grade 3 (unskilled), 4s. 6d. (20.); grade 4 (women), 3s. ltd. (2fd.).
Briggs workers were awarded the following in c r eases :—Craftsmen. welders, engineering and maintenance operatives, 31d. an hour; labourers. 2441.; other adult male operatives, 31d.; women, 21d.
TRAFFIC RILL DELAYED THE Road Traffic Bill was due for its
second reading in the House of Commons yesterday, but because of Parliamentary difficulties it had to be postponed. Whether the committee stage will be taken before the summer recess is not yet known.
TILLOTSON NOT COMING BACK
BECAUSE of the high prices required for transport units by the Road Haulage Disposal Board. Oswald Tillotson, Ltd., are not pursuing their proposal to re-enter road haulage.
