proposed closure of five London sorting centres
More than 21,000 Londonbased staff, including 5,000 drivers, are being asked whether they are prepared to strike over the Royal Mail's "refusal to negotiate an appropriate personnel package" to deal with the proposed closure of five London centres The ballot's results will be known tomorrow (2 July).
The Union of Com munication Workers, which is conducting the ballot, says the proposed closures could also be good news in the long term for private carriers.
It says Royal Mail will be left unable to respond to increased mail volumes once the recession ends.
