Transport consultant Roger Burton, who advises several hauliers including Crewe-based Chamberlain Transport, says that always displaying hazard lights when moving around the workplace helps remind drivers about health and safety and can provide a vital warning to other people. "In the workplace environment, there are lots of other things going on. If the hazard lights are on, people will know the vehicle is moving." He adds that most workplaces have clearly marked speed limits, but when no signs are visible, drivers should make a judgement about what speed is safe. Its down to the driver to carry out his own assessment as to what is going on around him." Hitchcock advises against mobile phone use 'unless the vehicle is in a stationary and parked position". Kevin O'Brien, compliance manager for Northampton-based C Butt, believes it Is important that visiting drivers spend time familiarising themselves with site safety rules. They need to know such things as where to go for first aid. They need to know what to do almost as if they were an employee on that site.
