• Hauliers working in Italy and Germany face lengthy delays unless they can produce a certificate for their trailers, the Road Haulage Association warns.
In the UK, there is no legal requirement for documentation until a trailer begins its second year of service, when a plating certificate is issued to show its roadworthiness.
But Italian and German authorities require trailers to be covered by a certificate whatever their age. In some cases UK hauliers have been forced to send out certificates by courier before their vehicles have been allowed through border crossings.
A Certificate of Ownership, costing £20, is available from the Vehicle Inspectorate; contact administrative officer Angela Whitty on 01792 454263.
