l'HE T&G UNION has suspended industrial action planned by drivers on Suckling Transport's Conoco contract after assurances that the company would revise its pay deal. In last-ditch negotiations between the union and Suckling directors, a deal was hammered out covering drivers delivering Conoco fuels.
A union spokeswoman says it will now recommend that members accept the firm's proposal of a two year agreement covering 2006-07.
The dispute centred on a perceived pay disparity between Suckling drivers on the Conoco contract and other drivers delivering for Conoco fuels (CM 15 February). T&G national secretary Ron Webb had warned that the planned three-day strikes would have a "significant impact" on the Conoco contract.
The turnout in the strike ballot was over 82%, with 75% backing a strike. Webb told CM: "It is unacceptable that tanker drivers working for the same firm on another contract are paid differences of around £2,000 and the size of the vote reflects our members' frustration."
Suckling managing director Peter Earner had previously expressed his optimism that the dispute would be resolved.
