THE RETAIL MARKET shows a mixed picture, suggesting that transport operators in this sector should diversify where they can and not stay within product lines that might be suffering.
A Distributive Trades Survey shows that grocers and booksellers had a strong March; it seems consumers are spending money in supermarkets rather than in restaurants.
Retailers generally are holding less stock, which together with a rising emphasis on neighbourhood retailing — ie express supermarkets and corner shops — will put more pressure on the supply While chain for just-in-time and smaller homeware local deliveries.
