AN application by Mr. T. E. Swainson, of Penrith, for B licences in respect of two tippers was granted last week by the Northern LA, Mr. Hanlon. Giving evidence, Swainson said that the business had been in existence since 1932. There had been an actual reduction in turnover since last year because he had been getting less tonnage work lately. He produced six supporting letters, which mentioned Swainson's satisfactory work but pointed out that inconvenience had been caused in the past because of insufficient vehicles. Cross-examined by Mr. A. Coines, representing objectors British Railways, as to whether he knew that other firms were also working for his customers. Swainson replied that he did know. Mr. Robson, for the applicant, submitted that the grant would affect the railways in only a very small way and said it was significant that no other hauliers had objected.
