• An £11 million extension to Scania's technical centre near the company's head office and main plant in Sodertalje, Sweden officially opens this week. Much of the additional space provided by the extension will be taken up by CAD (computer-aided design) work stations. Scania currently has 30 CAD terminals but plans to double this number. Scania's extensive technical library and central purchasing department will also be housed in the new building.
Speaking at the opening of the technical centre extension, Scania's vice-president of engineering and manufacturing, Stig Ericsson said: "We are at a vital point in our history. The enlarged technical centre will be of key importance to the further development and growth of our company."
Scania employs 1,100 people at the technical centre, which includes a comprehensive testtrack area.
Since the early seventies the centre has been responsible for Saab car engine and transmission development in addition to almost all Scalia commercial vehicle research and development work.
o Scania produced its 500,000th vehicle earlier this month and in a ceremony at its main plant in Sodertalle, Sweden, managing director, Ingvar Eriksson, gave the bonnetted T92 truck to the United Nations children's organisation, Unicef.
