BRITISH Leyland truck and Bus will have a stop-gap chief until a permanent successor can be found for Ron Ellis, the outgoing managing director.
He is Pat Lowry, Leyland's personnel chief and main board director, who takes charge of the Group temporarily.
Since Mr Lowry will continue to report to Alex Park, BL's chief executive, as director of personnel as well as handling Truck and Bus affairs he is clearly not in the running for the permanent md spot.
Mr Ellis is leaving Truck and Bus to become head of sales at the Ministry of Defence. He is believed to have been unhappy with the decision in the Ryder report that all truck exports should be controlled by British Leyland International.
Commenting on the appointment, Sir Richard Dobson, chairman of British Leyland Ltd, said: "We think it a compliment to British Leyland that Mr Ellis has been appointed to such an important job although we are sorry to lose him as part of the top management team.
"Mr Ellis will be resigning from the board of British Leyland to avoid any possibility of a conflict of interest."
