According to FUR Systems, its PathFindIR can detect heat from objects more than three times the distance of a truck's headlights placed on full beam.
We used a Volvo FH Globetrotter 700hp 6x2 tractor with the PathFindIR camera fitted in the front grille, just above the offside headlight.
To put the camera and object in context, we followed a car around the test track at the MIRA Proving Grounds, Hinckley, to see what sort of image would be created. A clear image of the vehicle is identified on screen, as well as plenty of heat emanating from the read.
As night descended, we then investigated how far we could see a parked car from. At 150m, with full beam at approximately 80m, we spotted the car that was parked directly in front of the vehicle.
Dealing with the darkness and a copious amount of rain, we interspersed moving traffic with pedestrians. Close-up viewing makes the distinction clear, but again we found the distance — 150m on the camera — as the point of reference of a pedestrian on the screen.
