IN a unique transport operation under the overall control of Big Lift BV, of Dordrecht, a Dutch operator specializing in the movement of heavy indivisible loads, a total of 60 large concrete building modules is being carried from Amsterdam to a GLC building site in Hammersmith.
The industrialized building system designed and manufactured by Basis Element Bouw BV, of Middenmeer, involves the use of prefabricated elements each weighing between 8 and 22 tonnes which contain ready-glazed kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, etc, complete with all equipment and finishes.
The maximum weight modules are m long and 2.5m wide and are carried from the factory on low-loaders, with Big Lift tractors, to Europoort, Rotterdam. After crossing to Felixstowe by rofro services the trailers are collected by British operators, including Russell Davies Ltd, of Felixstowe, on contract to Big Lift and taken to the GLC site in correct sequence and conformity with the erection schedule.
The Sunter outfit — a Volvo F89 and King semi-trailer — photographed at the Farm Lane site carried one of the building modules all the way from Holland as a backload following a Continental journey. Erection of the BEB modules is also the responsibility of Big Lift BV, using a British contractor's mobile crane. To facilitate vehicle access to the site under all weather conditions Big Lift has laid down temporary track plates to prevent low-loaders from bogging down.
The movement programme provides for the operation to be carried out in three phases with completion of the three-storey building in early spring.
