develop an environmental asset inventory system in 2002 to enable the collation of all the information it had gathered during road building and improvement projects. This data came from various sources, including environmentalists, and was gathered during field work on site. The software that was developed, ENVIS, enables all the stored information for any stretch of road to be accessed by anybody with permission to use the database. This data can be added to, or updated, as a project develops. Information is retrieved via a series of 'layers that overlay a map of the UK's road network. Each layer will enable the user to open certain groupings (ie soil type, species present), which in turn are divided into subsets. This allows those working on a given project access to up-to-date information and ensures that no duplication in effort is carried out.
