Big Transport Economies in Egg Distribution
LARGELARGEeconomies of road transport in the carriage of eggs. in Yorkshire are .promised by a scheme, which came into operation last week, for the • concentration of egg packing in the county. These activities have been taken over by a new company, Yorkshire Egg Packers, Ltd., the headquarters of .which are at DrighIington,
near Bradford. Each egg packer in the county has an interest in the company, which is the marketing channel for about 10,000 poultry farmers with a potential annual production of 10,000,000 eggs.
A first move in concentration is to reduce the number of packing statioaas from approximately 40 to about half ,that total. The Caine Valley affords a striking instance of transport saving
through the scheme., There, seven packers running lorries, have often been collecting eggs from places virtually next door to each other, but under the new arrangementsthe -number operating in the Valley is .reduced to two.
In the distribution of eggs, after packing, transport is being saved by the arrangement of a. number of points, so as to elimina,te overlapping. In Leeds, for instance, one distribution point will handle the supplies .which, hitherto, have been distributed .by 14 separate wholesalers. ' Even if a packer's business be eliminated under the -concentration scheme, he receives a share in the new company's profits pro. rata to the size of that business.
