THE Kienzle EDA 21 electronic tachograph chart reader can now provide a read-out of the more detailed information shown on the traces of the EEC.
type tachograph. Until recently the electronic reading of traces —on pre-EEC charts—was con fined to standing time and running time for the vehicle, (plus, distance covered).
As demonstrated at the Amsterdam Show, the EDA 21 can automatically read, and present in totalled-up form, driving time, "active" working time, "passive" working time (eg as a driver's mate), and breaks from working. It can do this because different widths of trace are now used to record these separate activities on the chart.
As before, the read-out can he punched on to cards and transferred to an electronic analyser which, for individual drivers and vehicles or for a fleet, will produce summaries of driving and working time and breaks, as totals and percentages, plus average speeds, vehicle utilisation percentage and, depending on input information, comparative fuel consumptions and details of operating costs.
Kienzle Apparate GmbH, Villingen, W. Germany, now • leases as well as sells the EDA 21 machines to operators, but still offers an electronic reading service to operators too small to justify the sole use of a machine.
Through a small number of centres on the Continent, it also offers the electronic analysis, though this can be done on any suitably programmed data processing system. Some large German operators use their company computers for monthly fleet tachograph analysis.
