• The Professional Drivers' Association claims that the French authorities are still failing to crackdown on asylum seekers, despite their agreement with the UK to close the Sangatte refugee centre.
Members of the campaign group who recently visited Calais say that, while they saw increased security preventing immigrants from entering the port area, they are concerned about the opening of a new Red Cross shelter just yards from Calais police headquarters, where they saw around 30 asylum seekers loitering.
Scott Walker, international driver representative for the FDA says: "Part of the deal to close the Sangatte shelter was that the French would deal with any immigrants that continued to arrive in the area. Clearly what we saw shows that the French authorities are not living up to their side of the agreement, and we are calling on the UK government to take action to prevent this getting any worse." security in Ostend.
