It was wonderful to read in CM (13-19 Feb) that Simon Hughes and the Lib-Dems are now supporting CMs campaign on stowaways. What a pity that the Lib-Dems did not support, or even speak about, my amendment on this issue in the House of Lords on 17 July, 2002.
If they had done so. drivers and operators might now have a statutory defence if they had used the checking facilities approved by the government prior to embarkation. It is t tne amendment that a certificate would be issued, just as they are now apparently advocating.
At the time, I could not help thinking that the Lib-Dems were more interested in the rights of bogus asylum seekers than ordinary decent lorry drivers and operators.
