Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TO obtain a true, reading on a dip

stick it is -essential that the blade. should be wiped clean before the reading is taken. If -a cloth be not handy, and it seldom is, the stick will probably be wiped on something that may carry dirt back to the sump.

A device, recently patented by Mr. C. J. Smith, 82, Framingham Road, Brooklands, Cheshire, serves automatically to wipe the stick as it is withdrawn from the sump.

Reference to the accompanying drawing will show that it consists of a rubber plug which fits into the dipstick hole in the crankcase. -The plug

has formed in it a hole Of such a shape' that if the dipstick be tilted as it is being withdrawn the plug acts as a wiper.

If the stick be inserted or withdrawn vertically no such action takes place. as the round section Of the hole permits the flat section of the stick to pass through without wiping the oil away.

An alternative arrangement is to have a tube and a plug made, as an accessory and secured in some convenient position, relative to the engine. The basic idea is simple and the cost should be slight if made as, an engine • _fixture,
