I am contemplating starting a trans port business carrying shoes to Common Market countries. The volume of each load will be between 500 and 600 Cu ft. Would you please tell me the size of vehicle which would be appropriate for such traffic?
A The bulk /weight ratio generally accep
ted in the road haulage industry is 120 cu ft per ton. On this basis you would need a vehicle of 5 or 6 tons capacity.
However, you should understand that, for vehicles of this size, you will need a permit for each journey from each EEC member country through which you intend to pass with the exception of Holland and Belgium. The permits for vehicles of this size are "quota" permits and only a limited number is available. You might have difficulty in obtaining them.
For further information on journey permits, you should apply to the Licensing Authority for the Northern Area, Low Friar House, Low Friar Road; Newcastle upon Tyne.
