by Miles Brignall • The Transport Select Committee is expected to call a halt to the Traffic Area Office closure plan until it reports its findings in July.
The call follows last week's decision by the Department of Transport to close the TAOs in Cardiff and Manchester. Members of the all-party com mittee are understood to be concerned that the DOT has gone ahead and taken the decision before they have made their recommendations.
The reaction to the closures has been mixed. Leeds TAO staff, who are expected to have to take over the work of the Manchester office, already feel they are overworked and would be unable to cope.
Meanwhile, the Freight Transport Association has renewed its call for the
network to be replaced by one centrally-located office run on similar lines to the DVLA office in Swansea.
"A central office would improve efficiency and at the same time free up staff and resources for roadside enforcement," says a spokesman.
