of bolts and nuts has been developed by London Transport. More than 65,000 items are already being reclaimed weekly.
The method varies with different units. The largest number of operations involved is in connection with bolts. which are sorted, identified, viewed and finally have their threads dressed as required. Bolts that are obviously unsuitable are rejected.
Highly stressed bolts, such as those used for connecting-rod big-ends, are given a restricted working life. A popmark is made each time such a bolt is withdrawn from service. The bolt is automatically rejected when it has collected three such marks.
Other parts similarly reclaimed include nuts, washers, studs and screws. The system is operated by elderly or partially disabled personnel.
