• None of the road-drive Volvos were fitted with ESP, but we were able try it under the most extreme circumstances of a closed ice-covered track, which you literally couldn't stand up on. The vehicle was an FH12 4x2 artic, fitted with restraining cables to prevent full jack-knifing. While the system is not magic, and is still subject to the unchangeable laws of physics, the extra time that it buys the driver to gain control when things go wrong could quite literally be of life-saving value.
Through a series of corners, the way in which the electronics took control of the brake and throttle pedals was initially rather disconcerting, even when it was expected, The most extreme test was in a simulated 'elk test', or lane-change manoeuvre, in which an S-bend was marked out by cones barely wider than the truck. With increasing confidence, we were able to complete the manoeuvre at 50km/h without so much as touching a cone or putting a wheel out of piace.
