THE Minister of Transport has partly upheld an appeal by Charles W. Banfield, Ltd., against a restrictive condition imposed on an excursion and tour licence by the Metropolitan Deputy Traffic Commissioner. The condition limited to 12 the maximum number of vehicles to be operated during any day. He agrees with Mr. P. H. Harrold, who heard the appeal, that the restriction was not justified by the evidence as sought by the objector. On the other hand, the Commissioner was right in holding that Banfield's had not shown that it was desirable in the public interest for their excursions and tours from Liverpool Grove, London, S.E.17, to be able to expand beyond the vehicle allowance imposed on their previous separate licence for services from this point. The Minister has limited to 12 the number of vehicles to be used from Liverpool Grove, and has ordered that two separate licences should be issued. One enables passengers to be picked up at Liverpool Grove; Cooper'sRoad,S.E.1, and Nunbead Lane, S.E.15, with a daily overall maximum of 12 vehicles: The other authorizes picking-up at Cooper's Road and Nunhead Lane without that restriction. Each licence will contain a condition specifying the maximum daily number of round trips to be operated on each excursion and tour under both licences together.
CO-ORDINATING POLICY CRITICIZED
CRITICISMS of a Government pro's-, posal to set up a new co-ordinating transport authority for bus and rail services in South Lancashire have been made by the Bolton transport undertaking and local bus companies. A central board, based on Manchester, ;5 proposed to deal with Lancashire traffic problems. Bus operators consider this to be a bad move because it would mean that local problems would not get the same amount of attention as they do at present. Aid. W. Walsh. chairman, Bolton Transport Committee, said that bus services were better run by a local body.
