AS forecast in COMMERCIAL MOTOR last week,
P. H. R. Turner has been elected national chairman of the Road Haulage Association. Controller of road transport for Coast Lines Ltd., and formerly general manager of Thomas Allen Ltd., Mr. Turner said last week that increased productivity, more efficient vehicles and better relations with the public were among the particular objectives which he hoped to see achieved during his term of office. He is particularly. interested in getting changes authorized in the size and weight of vehicles, and he hopes that the necessary changes in the structure of the Association will be made to meet the presentday requirements of members.
The four vice-chairmen elected by the new national council include only one of the retiring vice-chairmen: R. Clifford, chairman and managing director of R. Clifford Ltd., Seaham, Co. Durham. The three other vice-chairmen for 1966-7 are W. McMillan, J. P. Wells and N. R. Wynn. Mr. McMillan is a director of James Hemphill Ltd., Glasgow, with whom he has served since 1931; he is at present chairman of the RHA bulk liquids functional group and chairman of the Scottish area. Mr. Wells has, since 1957, been managing director of his family business, Wells and Son (London) Ltd., and has served on several area and national committees. He has been on the national council for several years and more recently has served on the executive and finance committees; he was chairman of the recent study group on labour relations. Among his interests outside the Association are membership of the Court of Assistants, Worshipful Company of Carmen, and of the transport committee of the London Chamber of Commerce.
Noel Wynn is director, secretary and assistant general manager of Robert Wynn and Sons Ltd., Newport, the family business which he joined in 1951 after practice as a qualified solicitor. When the Wynn company became part of the United Transport Group ne vas appointed a director of Bulwark Contracts Ltd. Mr. Wynn has been chairman of the South Wales area of the RHA, has served on national and local committees and was chairman of the study group on co-operation presented to the national council earlier this year. The new executive committee of the Association will comprise;
ex officio, P. H. R. Turner, R. Clifford, W, McMillan, I. P. Wells, J. R. Wynn and A. R. Butt (immediate past chairman), while area-nominated members will be: R. Durham (Northern); W. Bridge (Yorkshire (Leeds)); L. Masters (Yorkshire (Sheffield)); J. L. Dunn (Yorkshire (Hull)); A. Atkinson (North Western (Eastern)); It. S. Heaton (North Western (Western)); H. Bradshaw (East Midland); G. W. Mousley (West Midland); C. C. Nelson (South Wales); F. E. Russett (Western); D. 0. Good (Devon and Cornwall); H. J. Baker (Southern); R. B. Brittain (Eastern); E. R. Taylor (Metropolitan) and E. W. Voller (South Eastern).
In addition, the following members have been elected by the national council: J. Allsop, R. Atkins, F. Baker, W. Bingley, R. A. Edwards, R. H. Farmer, G. H. Gardner, It. N. Ingram, 1. E. Kirby, J. B. Mitchell, N. T. O'Reilly, G. Reader. F. Rudman and H. F. Whitton.
The finance committee will consist of the chairman and four vice-chairmen, together with: W. Bridge, D. 0. Good, K. A. Hatcher, R. N. Ingram and .1. B. Mitchell.
The employers' panel of the Road Haulage Wages Council will now have the following members: W. Bridge, F. Baker, R. B. Brittaln, G. E. Chettle, R. Clifford, R. Durham, R. A. Edwards, R.N. Farmer, R. S. Heaton, E. Hemphill, L. C. Matthews. W. McMillan, N. T. O'Reilly, T. J. E. Price, F. Rudman and J. P. Wells.
On the labour relations committee will be: F. Baker, G. E. Chettle, R. Clifford, R. A. Edwards, R, H. Farmer, R. S. Heaton, E. Hemphill, W. McMillan, N. T. O'Reilly, T. J. E. Price, R. Rudman and J. P. Wells.
