RECENT reports by the health committee of the Essex County Council state that for some years the BMC LD chassis has been used for the council's ambulance fleet. However, the committee says that the equipment now carried on these ambulances is such that it cannot be accommodated satisfactorily in bodies built on this chassis.
The committee has been advised that the Ford Transit chassis would be suitable for the county's purposes, providing for a wide range of body sizes, as well as more comfort for personnel.
Accordingly, and subject to modification to meet its requirements in the matter of floor level, the Essex committee has in mind the use of the 35 cwt. version for the 12 replacement units for which provision is being made in its 1966-7 estimates. The committee's aim is to obtain practical experience on which to base a decision as to the desirability of its general adoption for its ambulance purposes.
