DESPONDING to the urgent ileed for arc welders in the constniction of armaments of all types, a branch of the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., has set up fpr training purposes welding booths as illustrated on this page, with complete equipment furnished by the Lincoln Electric Co. Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, which is claimed to he the World's largest producer of arc-welding equipment. Beside each booth, one of the latest -models of the maker's portable arc-welding machines is seen.
The Ford company took applications for training from men who formerly worked on the assembly line, or who had other occupations less vital to the war effort than welding. We understand that, at the time of writing, 290 men have already been trained.
On eight-hoar shifts, the booths are occupied by 20 men who receive intensive training in arc welding. The school is temporary, and so soon as enough operators have been trained, the welding machines will be set up elsewhere in the works for actual prOduction.
As part of the course of study, evening meetings between students and shop personnel are arranged. At these,, instructors, by means of slides and blackboard drawings, show the methods of producing different welded joints and explain the problems involved in each.
