• A major transport complex for the east of Scotland fruit trade is planned within the Chesser Avenue Gorgie complex now under way for the Edinburgh and East of Scotland Fruit Trade Association. They will build a £400,000 fruit market at Chesser, to he completed one year hence, with a 9000 sq ft market block, a 4000 sq ft cold store and a transport centre measuring 400ft by 31ft 6in. to house the transport of the nine firms involved. They have formed Edinburgh Fruit Market Ltd to plan, construct and administer the new market which will have a one-third Government grant under the grant system covering new markets. The new company is composed of representatives from the nine trading . companies in the existing market at Market Street, Waverley, Edinburgh, which is being vacated to allow the Corporation to build a spur road to the eastern link route, work on which has now begun.
By this transfer to Gorgie the operations of importers from Leith, road hauliers from the southern ports and from Liverpool will be redirected away from the centre of the city and a new concentration of produce industry transportation will be established in the area—as happened at Blochairn in Glasgow when the Glasgow Market moved.
