• Profound deafness was no barrier to John Thompson of Redditch when he recently qualified as a C Class LGV driver with Associated Transport Training.
Thompson, 28, has always wanted to drive lorries, and got his chance through the Central England TEC-funded Training for Work initiative. He is now licensed to drive any large rigid.
"I really enjoyed the training," says Thompson, "but the difficult part is finding a firm who will agree to employing a deaf driver. I can lip read, and am comfortable with use of the fax and telephone using the minicom or pocket pager system, so communication is no problem."
