• The Hanson group has hit out at the Government's decision to scrap a number of road schemes, saying it will have a knock-on effect on aggregates subsidiary ARC.
Hanson chief executive Andrew Dougal says conditions for ARC are challenging. The maintenance of existing roads and the construction of new bypasses and motorways "are vital to economic growth", says Dougal.
ARC pushed up operating profit by 6%, from £42.8 million for the first half of 1996 to 245.4m this year.
